Another A2 Blog Contribution

I am Dorys. I'm going to tell you about my hobby, teacher.

I have loved dancing since I was a little girl. I danced in the town festival, I participated in contests with my cousins and friends. I had a lot of fun dancing and winning prizes.

I love music and dancing, it is my favourite hobby. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music and during the week I go to the gym to practise zumba.

Although I like to read a new book when I have some free time, most weekends I love to relax at home and spend time with family and friends, many of those weekends I do jazz dance with my daughters. My  favourite kinds of music are bachata, salsa, merengue and ballads. I love dancing: I relax and have a lot of fun, and it is also a way to exercise and improve my health.

A2 Blog Contribution

Hello,

My name is María José and I am going to tell you about my hobbies.

I like dancing very much, but I don't usually go dancing because my husband doesn't like it. Sometimes my daughters and I turn on the radio and we dance a lot.

I like reading, but I don't have much time to read, so I try to read when I'm on holiday. I enjoy reading a book on the beach very much.

I like going to our family's country house in Cenicientos and take care of the flowers. I like collecting fruit and cooking jam with it. This weekend I have gone to the country and we have collected quinces. Now I have to cook  quince sweet and quince jam.

Do you like quince?

Bye, I'll see you tomorrow.

Reading Comprehension Exercise. A2

Below you have a very simple short story that you can read in a moment. Reading regularly is one of the best ways to improve your English.

Emily is 8 years old. She lives in a big house. She has a huge room. She has many toys and she has a lot of friends. But Emily is not happy. She has a secret.

She doesn't want to tell anyone about her secret. She feels embarrassed. The problem is that if nobody knows about it, there is no one that can help her.

Emily doesn't write her homework. When there is an exam – she gets sick. She doesn't tell anyone, but the truth is she can't read and write. Emily doesn't remember the letters of the alphabet.

One day, Emily's teacher finds out. She sees that Emily can't write on the board. She calls her after class and asks her to tell the truth. Emily says, "It is true. I don't know how to read and write". The teacher listens to her. She wants to help Emily. She tells her, "That's ok. You can read and write if we practice together".

So Emily and her teacher meet every day after class. They practice together. Emily works hard. Now she knows how to read and write!

Did you understand the story?
What do you think the moral is?

BTW, this reminded me of a film that I watched many years ago.

Another secret that will help you when learning English (Source: English Club)

Sentence Stress

Sentence stress is the music of spoken English. Like word stress, sentence stress can help you to understand spoken English, even rapid spoken English.

Sentence stress is what gives English its rhythm or "beat". You remember that word stress is accent on one syllable within a word. Sentence stress is accent on certain words within a sentence.

Most sentences have two basic types of word:

  • content words
Content words are the keywords of a sentence. They are the important words that carry the meaning or sense—the real content.
  • structure words
Structure words are not very important words. They are small, simple words that make the sentence correct grammatically. They give the sentence its correct form—its structure.

If you remove the structure words from a sentence, you will probably still understand the sentence.

If you remove the content words from a sentence, you will not understand the sentence. The sentence has no sense or meaning.

Tips to learn English. Number 1.

Word Stress
is golden key number One for speaking and understanding English.

Word Stress is very important. You can try to learn about Word Stress. This is one of the best ways for you to understand spoken English—especially English spoken fast.

What is Word Stress?

Take 3 words: photograph, photographer, photographic, for example. Do they sound the same when spoken? No! They sound very different, because one syllable in each word is "stressed" (stronger than the others).

PHOtograph

phoTOgrapher

photoGRAPHic

This happens in all words with two or more syllables:

TEACHer, JaPAN, CHINa, aBOVE, converSAtion, INteresting, imPORtant, deMAND, etCETera

The syllables that are not stressed are "weak" or "small" or "quiet". Native speakers of English listen for the stressed syllables, not the weak syllables. If you use Word Stress in your speech, you will instantly and automatically improve your pronunciation and your comprehension.

If you have an English teacher, ask him or her to help you understand Word Stress. Try to hear the stress in words each time you listen to English—on the radio, or in films for example. Your first step is to hear and recognise it. After that, you can use it!
