Thanks so much for this contribution, Bea.
It's very interesting. I hope reading it will encourage your classmates to write something themselves.
The book and the TV series summarise Gerald Durrell’s childhood in Corfu. This life-changing experience would consolidate Gerald’s knowledge of Nature, which would make him turn into one of the best-known British conservationists. Not only is Gerald’s autobiography worth reading, but getting to know all his three siblings and mother is also a great experience. Starting with his mother, as soon as you get to know her, you will empathise with this early 20th century widow who has to raise four bizarre children on her own. The eldest brother, Larry, is a pretentious young writer who later will become a prominent author and war journalist. Then there is Leslie, who is obsessed with all kinds of guns and weapons, and Margo a young lady ahead of her time.
I highly recommend you both the novel and the TV series. From the novel you can extract the essence of this family seen through a child’s eyes, and from the TV series the outstanding performance of the British and Greek actors and of course the marvellous Corfu sights.
