Jolene

This is one of my favourite songs ever.
Can you summarise what the lyrics say?

  1. I'm so amazed with this cover! I love how they remade this song.

But I think Miley's performance of this version is perfect. By far the best song I have ever heard from Miley, I like it even more than the original, maybe it's because of the power of the voice:

The song tells of Parton confronting Jolene, a beautiful woman («Your beauty is beyond compare. With flaming locks of auburn hair. With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green»), who she worries will steal away her lover. Throughout the song, Parton implores Jolene "please don't take him just because you can."

If I am not wrong, in an interview given by the singer, she said that she was inspired to write the song by a beautiful woman, a bank worker, who was flirting with her husband around the time they were newly married.

If you really like Dolly Patron, there is an eight-episode anthology based on some of Parton's most popular songs, including "Jolene" on Netflix, and they are in English (with English subtitles too), it's called Dolly Parton's Heartstrings!

    1. I didn't know about the song being based on a real story. Thanks for the info, Fatima.
And thanks for telling me about the TV show. I was very excited about it, but I only saw the first episode because I didn't like it too much. Have you watched it yourself?

    2. To be honest, I prefer fantasy series but I watched this one because I had heard several of Dolly's songs and I was curious about it. I don't think it does her justice considering how famous she is in the United States, but at least it's entertaining.

    3. Famous, resilient and a force of nature.
I like her a lot, but my country music idol is her late friend, Kenny Rogers.

  2. She is asking Jolene not to take her man, because Jolene is very beautiful and can have as many men as she wants, but the singer really loves him, he's the only one for her.

  3. I have nothing much to add to my classmates' comments about the explanation of the lyric, let me say that I really like Country Music and especially the songs of Dolly Parton. I strongly recommend to listen 'Take me home country road' a song that brings to light a recurrent topic in countries' songs, the enjoyment that the singers profess for the dazzling beauty of the North American landscape.

  4. I also love country music, Carlos.
Does Dolly Parton sing the song you mention? I thought it was John Denver. Or maybe both. No idea.
Remember lyrics has an s at the end.

    1. Yes she does Maria! However, I hope Carlos agrees with me, it is better the version by John Denver. Here is the link to the song performed by Dolly Patron:

  5. I really love my classmates' summaries, but I wonder if anyone can think she is going to keep her man with her by asking Jolene not to take him. I guess love doesn´t work this way. Maybe he will stay with her, but it doesn´t mean he is going to forget Jolene. That sounds strange.
I love the song, but I disagree with the singer´s behaviour. Sorry!

    1. It's just Poetry but you have introduced an interestig subject: the distinction of Art and Artist behaviour.
What about if Hitler and Charles Manson had been magnificient painters? Or, what about the doubts about Roman Polansky's life?

    2. As you say it's an I interesting and controversial topic. I think art exceeds the artist, but I can't avoid relating both things. If an artist is a bad person I usually don't appreciate his art in the same way as if he were a good person. For example I don't like what Miguel Bosé is saying about COVID and I wouldn't go to a concert of him nowadays. The same with Paclido domingo and his women's abuse

    3. Yes, it's difficult to separate, but I wonder if we should. You are speaking about singers, but maybe if the artist was a painter it would be different.
Regarding Miguel B, apparently he was going through a bitter divorce at the time.

  6. A woman is suffering for fearing to lose her lover due to he is falling in love with Jolene and she begs her not taking him from her.
The man sais the name of Jolene in his sleep and she knows the beauty of Jolene has not comparison and knows that, if the man goes with Jolene, the woman is not going to love again because the man is the only one for her, whereas Jolene, with her beauty, does have more choice to find other men.

    1. Good summary, Jose Luis.
      A couple of things:
      - begs her not to take
      - says
      - Jolene's beauty

  7. Jose Luis, Ana,
It's true that the topic Ana started is interesting. And your answer is also thought-provoking, Jose Luis.
Thanks. It's interesting to listen to different points of view.

  8. This cover is very good although personally I like the real version better since Dolly expresses more feelings when singing it. It is of great admiration how, in a simple song, she shows her experience with a man who was unfaithful to her.

In the song, she asks his lover not to take her man away, not to seduce him with her beauty. Jolene, refers to the name of her rival, but it was not her real name. That is the name of a fan who asked her for an autograph who had similar features to her husband's lover.

The story of this singer can be seen in the Netflix series "Acordes del corazón", where she tells the story of this song and many more

  9. Hi Ariadna,
Nice to finally see you here. Technology can be frustrating sometimes, even for experts.
Thanks for the info about Jolene's name. I didn't know that.
The TV show you mention is called Dolly's Heartstrings.
Just one little thing: you should change the beginning of the last sentence in the first paragraph to something like: It's surprising how... I admire her because of the way she manages to...
